Course Information:
 
This is Australia’s first and only recognised TECSOL course.* It has been fully accredited by VETAB (NSW Vocational Education and Training Board) and is designed for people without previous teaching experience who wish to become professional teachers of English to (child) speakers of other languages. This course is also suitable for those who wish to have this experience endorsed with a qualification.
 
DURATION AND HOURS
  • Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 3:00pm
  • 6 weeks at 25 hours per week
  • Includes one week practicum (pre-school placement)
  • Courses start every Monday
 
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
  • 5.5 IELTS General Training Module; or
  • TOEIC/TOEFL equivalent; or
  • Greenwich College Entry Test every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00am
  
On this course trainees will:
  • learn how to design lessons and teach English to children of various ages
  • be trained through activity based lessons as you learn to teach lessons in reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • learn background TECSOL theories and teaching methodologies
  • learn and use a wide range of teaching skills and techniques that are fun for the classroom
  • choose elective classes allowing trainees to specialise in: Phonics, Craft or Games & Activities.
  • develop skills in syllabus design
  • learn more than 50 games and teaching activities and more than 30 songs and chants
  • gain valuable experience working with real children in preschools and kindergartens
  • receive a Learning Pack that includes: textbook, Games & Activities book, study materials, flash cards, audio tools, pens and other assorted materials.
 
 
Vocational Outcomes:  
  • Graduates of this course are able to teach and assist teaching children English throughout the world  

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TECSOL AND CERTIFICATE IV IN TECSOL?
Greenwich College offers two quality TECSOL programs that are designed to suit the needs of our trainees. The TECSOL course is the original program that has been so popular with Greenwich College trainees over the years. The newly designed Certificate IV in TECSOL goes further by offering a nationally recognised training qualification, accredited by VETAB.

Introduces trainees to the basics of teaching EFL/ESL to children
...Includes higher level techniques of teaching EFL/ESL to children
Introduces trainees to Activity based lessons (the most common style of lesson)
…Builds on Activity based lessons and introduces alternative styles of lesson planning such as song ,story and cultural event based lessons
Explains the basics of teaching a group of child learners
 
...Also explains how to plan a syllabus,
work in a professional environment

Teaches 20 traditional songs and chants
…Teaches 30 traditional and contemporary songs and chants, with special emphasis on physical actions, movement and music
3 elective classes in phonics, craft and teaching games

Teaches trainees to develop basic teaching resources such as flash cards, production games and activity worksheets
 
…Also teaches trainees to develop higher level teaching resources such as puppets, masks, books and books, making use of internet resources
Teaches 30 activities and teaching games

Includes one week of working with children in a pre-school
...Offers an optional extra one week of working with children in a pre-school
Trainees teach their peers with feedback from Trainers

What are the differences between TECSOL and Cert IV (also see notes above)?
·         The Introductory Course introduces people to the basics of teaching EFL to children.
·         The Certificate IV Course also includes higher level techniques of teaching EFL to children.

·         The Certificate IV Course is taught by
o   two experienced trainers
o   three extra Options trainers
 
·         The Introductory Course teaches trainees to make basic teaching resources like flash cards
·         The Certificate IV Course teaches trainees to make basic teaching resources like flash cards  but also teaches trainees to make higher level teaching resources like:
o   Puppets and masks,
o   books and worksheets
 
·         The Introductory Course includes about 30 activities and teaching games
·         The Certificate IV Course also teaches 30activities and teaching games but includes
o   20 more games and teaching activities
 
·         The Introductory Course includes one week of working with children in a preschool
·         The Certificate IV Course also includes one week of working with children in a preschool, but
o   students have the option of taking one more week if they would like it.
 
·         The Introductory Course requires students to spend one week in a preschool to gain experience working with young children.
·         The Certificate IV Course requires students to spend one week in a preschool to gain experience working with young children but also
o   requires trainees to teach groups of young learners in preschools.
 
·         The Introductory Course requires trainees to teach their peers with feedback from trainers
·         The Certificate IV Course requires trainees to teach their peers with feedback from trainers  but also
o   requires trainees to videotape their best lessons for feedback purposes

What is Accreditation?
·         Accreditation is the quality assurance process used to formally recognize national qualifications. VETAB is the recognition authority which accredits vocational education and training courses in NSW
 
What is a Certificate IV?
·         Certificate IV is the highest level of certificate offered by VETAB. Certificate IV courses are practical courses that prepare people to take on a role in the working environment.
·         All Certificate IV courses have been accredited by VETAB (the State Government regulator).
·         This means the courses have been written and operated to the government standard
 
National Accreditation/VETAB?
·         VETAB is the Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board of NSW.
·         This is the government organisation that approves and monitors courses to make sure they have been designed and run to a high standard.

·         Is your course taught in English? If not how can student s be expected to  teach English?
