Part Time Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Course Information:

rsa1

The part-time Certificate IV in TESOL is designed for those wanting to teach English as a foreign or second language in Australia or for those looking to travel abroad and teach. This part-time program has been designed to suit the needs of those who may have other work and study obligations.
As teacher training specialists, Greenwich College offers all TESOL trainees the chance to become part of the ESL environment here at the Sydney campus. With students studying here from all over the world, trainees are able to observe how our professional teachers plan and manage their classes as well as teaching a minimum of six classes themselves.

The study demands are rigorous, and students will be expected to complete practicum work outside their evening lessons. The course is designed for native English speakers and high-level non-native speakers to study together.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1) How does the course qualify me to work in Australia?
The Certificate IV in TESOL is one of the qualifications needed to teach English language in nationally accredited ELICOS colleges in Australia (the other requirements include a degree, and either a diploma in education or 800 hours of teaching experience).

2) Is the course internationally recognised?
Within Australia, an accredited Certificate or Diploma must be recognised by all other VET institutions. Outside of Australia, recognition is dependent on an institution's recognition of the Australian Qualification Training Framework. Graduates of the Greenwich course are given descriptors of the course to assist employers in determining the content of the course.

3) How does the course compare to the CELTA course?
In Australia, Greenwich's Certificate IV in TESOL is en par with the CELTA. Both have similar content, and unlike the university courses, both focus on practical classroom skills rather than on education theory. The Certificate IV in TESOL is regarded as an equivalent to CELTA based on NEAS requirements. To teach English in NEAS accredited schools in Australia, teachers must have a Certificate IV in TESOL or an equivalent such as CELTA.

4) How does the price compare to the CELTA course?
The Greenwich course compares very favourably to CELTA because it is cheaper and yet 30 hours longer. As a qualification, both are valuable assets in finding teaching work within the local and international language teaching industry.

5) Do I need to know another language?
A second language is not a requirement of the course but having learnt a second language will help trainees understand language learning from the learner's perspective. To assist in this development students are taught basic Spanish (or another language) so that learning and teaching patterns can be mapped.

6) Does Greenwich help me find to a job after graduating the course?
Greenwich College will provide you with information on where to search for jobs. We will also provide you with country-specific information from a range of teachers who have spent time teaching in those countries, giving you information about living in the country and valuable information on how and where to find work. Graduates who perform at a high standard in the course may also be eligible for employment at Greenwich College's ELICOS school.

7) Can I do a combination of RPL and coursework?
Yes. In a pre-course interview it will be determined if any of a candidates' previous professional experience could count towards certification on this course. In such cases students may be exempt from attending certain parts of the course. However, most candidates will require the full 8 weeks of study.
